Inspect, seal, trap

Mice exterminator in Tucson

As a mice exterminator in Tucson, we start with an inspection for the entry points, the nesting areas and how far the infestation has spread, then we seal the gaps and trap the runways until the catches stop.

Sealing is what the trade calls "exclusion", and most people call it rodent proofing. Removal is a mix of exclusion, trapping and, outside, baiting, and it is the sealing that keeps mice from coming back once the traps come up.

  • Inspect

Droppings and greasy rub marks along the walls show us which paths the mice run and where they hole up.

  • Seal

Gaps get closed down to a quarter inch with copper mesh, sheet metal and mortar, never foam on its own.

  • Trap

Snap traps go close together along the runways, triggers against the wall, with return visits until the catches stop.

Step one: seal

Rodent inspection and sealing entry points

Inspection and sealing usually take one visit of two to five hours, and we close gaps down to a quarter inch with copper mesh, sheet metal and mortar rather than foam. We confirm which rodent it is first, because the sealing threshold depends on the species.

The sealing visit runs in this order:

  1. Find every opening

We walk the outside and the inside for entry points, following the "rub marks", the greasy smudges mice leave along walls and at the holes they use.

  2. Close it down to a quarter inch

Quarter-inch hardware cloth covers the larger openings, and backer rod and sealant fill the joints the metal cannot.

  3. Finish the patch

Stucco patch and wood trim close the repair flush with the wall so the opening stays shut.

Why not foam?Foam on its own does not stop a mouse, so we never use it alone in a gap.

Step two: trap

Trapping mice along the runways

We trap mice with many snap traps set close together along the runways, triggers against the wall, over one to three weeks of return visits. Snap traps take the place of indoor bait so the dead mouse can be recovered.

Trapping follows the mice like this:

  1. Bait the traps, unset

We may start with traps baited and left unset so the mice get used to them.

  2. Set them on the runways

Once the mice are used to the bait, we set each trap where it sits.

  3. Move and rebait

As the travel patterns become clear we move traps and change the bait.

  4. Come back until it stops

On each return visit we clear and reset the traps, and we stop when the catches do.

Between visits

Rodent monitoring and bait stations

Rodent programs use tamper-resistant "bait stations", the boxes people call poison boxes, serviced on a schedule, and some add thermal tools or digital sensors that report activity. Inside a home the work is trapping; exterior bait stations are kept for some commercial settings.

The tools a monitoring program can use:

  • Bait stationsTamper-resistant boxes outside, checked and serviced regularly.
  • Thermal toolsThey pick up rodent activity indoors, behind what the eye can see.
  • Digital sensorsThey report rodent activity around the clock; Anticimex SMART is one such system.

What it costs

How mice control is priced

Mice control is priced by how much sealing the building needs and whether contaminated insulation has to be cleaned up. For a sense of scale, here is what it typically runs in Tucson:

$150 to $350
Typical for initial treatments
$100 to $500
Typical for a small infestation

Sealing gaps to a quarter inch across a whole building is slow work, and older properties have more openings, which raises the cost. Cleanup adds to it when insulation is contaminated or urine trails are extensive.

Homes and kitchens

Residential and commercial rodent control

We treat houses and apartments, and we treat commercial kitchens and dry goods storage, where mouse activity is a compliance problem before anyone sees a mouse. A rodent job can also take in cleaning droppings, replacing insulation and repairing chewed wires.

Don't wait on it

Why mice are worth acting on early

Mice breed fast, so a small problem in autumn is a large one by late winter. Every week the traps wait, there are more mice to catch and more droppings to clean up.

Seeing even one or two mice is reason to call a professional, because the ones you see are rarely all of them.

Why we trap mice instead of poisoning them

Poison makes mice die inside walls, cabinets or ceilings, where they are hard to reach. Trapping lets the dead mouse be recovered, which is why we use snap traps instead of indoor bait.

Mouse droppings and health risks

Mice can bring three health risks into a home:

  • Hantavirus, from breathing in particles of dried droppings and urine
  • Food spoiled, since a mouse contaminates far more than it eats
  • Salmonella, which rodents spread to food

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains how hantavirus spreads from rodents.

Is it mice or rats?

Getting the species right matters, because sealing thresholds and trap strategy differ between mice and rats. We confirm which one you have on the inspection.

Mice control questions

Is it worth getting an exterminator for mice?

Yes: seeing even one or two mice is reason to call a professional, because mice breed fast and a small autumn problem is a large one by late winter. We seal the gaps they come through and trap the runways, which is what keeps them from coming back.

How do I get rid of mice permanently?

Close every gap down to a quarter inch with copper mesh, sheet metal and mortar, since foam alone does not keep mice out. Then trap the mice already inside with snap traps set close together along the runways until the catches stop.

What is the average cost to get rid of mice?

Mouse control in Tucson typically runs $150 to $350 for initial treatments, and about $100 to $500 for a small infestation. The price rises with how much sealing the building needs and any cleanup of contaminated insulation, and we quote the whole job before we start.
