Breeding water first

Mosquito control in Tucson

Mosquito control in Tucson starts with a walk around your yard to find the containers, drainage areas and dense plants where mosquitoes breed or rest, and then we remove the water or treat it.

Most of the job is "source reduction": getting rid of the standing water where the next batch is growing. On the first visit we check three kinds of places:

  • ContainersPlant saucers, buckets, fountains and anything else that holds water.
  • Drainage areasLow spots and drains where water sits after it rains.
  • Dense vegetationThick, shaded shrubs and beds, the "harborage" where adult mosquitoes rest.

From the first visit to a quiet yard

How a mosquito job runs

You call, we set a time to walk the yard, and from there the work runs in three stages, each one checked against what the last visit found.

Here is what happens after that first walk-through, in order.

  1. Larvicide for breeding water

Standing water we have no way to dump, like a fountain, a pond edge or a drain that holds water, gets treated with "larvicide", following the product label, which kills the next generation before it hatches.

Larvicide is what most people call mosquito dunks. It goes into the damp breeding sites themselves, which is where the eggs and larvae are.

The water it goes into most often:

    • Fountains
    • Pond edges
    • Drains that hold water
    • Low spots that stay damp
  2. mosquito monitoring trap in a yard

    Mosquito monitoring traps and stations

We monitor with carbon dioxide traps, "oviposition stations" and indoor UV glue-board lights, and we review every one of them each visit and adjust for any new water.

Oviposition stations draw mosquitoes that are ready to lay eggs, so they show us where breeding is still going on.

  3. Two to three applications over a month

Bringing mosquitoes under control can take two to three applications over about 30 days. Each one follows the breeding sites and resting spots the traps point to, and the timeline usually looks like this:

    • First applicationWater dumped or treated, resting spots treated, traps set
    • Follow-upTraps reviewed, new water after rain found and treated
    • About 30 days inNumbers checked against where they started

More than a nuisance

Why mosquito bites are more than a nuisance

Mosquitoes carry serious diseases, so cutting their numbers around your home matters for more than comfort on the patio.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that mosquitoes spread West Nile and other infections, and that controlling them around the home prevents bites.

What diseases do mosquitoes carry?

Mosquitoes can carry more than eight serious diseases, and West Nile virus is among them. Here is what that means for a yard:

  • Dense, shaded plants by the patio are where biting adults rest
  • Standing water near the house is where the next batch breeds
  • Fewer mosquitoes around the house means fewer bites where you live

Questions we hear

Mosquito control questions

What is the most effective way to control mosquitoes?

Get rid of the water they breed in first. We check containers, drainage areas and dense plants, dump the standing water we can, and treat the rest with larvicide so the next generation does not hatch.

What is the best thing to put in your yard for mosquitoes?

For water you cannot drain, like a fountain or a pond edge, larvicide is the product made for it, used the way its label says. Beyond that, the best thing for the yard is less: fewer saucers, buckets and containers holding water after rain.

What is the best mosquito control system that actually works?

One that pairs treatment with monitoring: traps and stations that are reviewed each visit and adjusted for new water. Bringing mosquitoes under control often takes two to three applications over about 30 days.

What is the best thing to stop mosquitoes?

Stop them at both ends: the water they breed in and the dense, shaded plants they rest in. Traps and stations then show whether a breeding site is still producing them, so the next application goes where it is needed.
